He twice built up the Witwatersrand library, initially when it was without one and again after a disastrous fire in 1931. By the time he retired the stock had grown to 250,000 administered by a staff of 20. He was one of the first members of the South African LA, the founder and first editor of South African Libraries and President 1938-1939. He published Bibliography and modern bookproduction (1954).
